    How this calculator works

It follows the same steps as an employer's payroll system, one paycheck at a time:

    1. Gross pay. Salary divided by the number of paychecks, or hourly rate times hours, with overtime hours at 1.5 times the rate.
    2. Pre-tax deductions. A traditional 401(k) or 403(b) lowers income-tax wages but not Social Security and Medicare wages. Health, dental and vision premiums, and HSA or FSA contributions through a cafeteria plan, lower both.
    3. Federal income tax. IRS Publication 15-T Worksheet 1A for a 2020-or-later W-4. It annualizes the paycheck, applies the Step 2 checkbox, Step 3 credits and Step 4 adjustments, and uses the 2026 percentage tables. Our tests compare it with every cell of the IRS wage-bracket tables.
    4. Social Security and Medicare. 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base and 1.45% with no cap, plus 0.9% Additional Medicare above $200,000.
    5. Georgia income tax. The Department of Revenue percentage method: subtract the per-paycheck standard deduction for your G-4 status and $5,000 a year per allowance, then apply 4.99%.
    6. Take-home pay. Gross pay minus taxes and deductions. The effective rate is total tax divided by gross pay. The marginal rate is how much of your next $100 of pay goes to tax.

The result is what should be withheld from your paychecks. Your final tax, figured on your return, can differ because of credits, other income, or a spouse's pay.

    Tips for Georgia workers

    • Fill out both forms. Georgia does not use your W-4. Without a Form G-4 your employer may withhold as if you were single with zero allowances. How the G-4 works.
    • Two earners? Married couples who both work should each choose G-4 status B. Status C (the $30,000 deduction) is for one-earner couples.
    • Early-2026 paychecks may have been withheld at the old 5.19% rate until employers switched to 4.99% on or after May 11, 2026. The difference is settled on your 2026 return. Georgia rate guide.
    • Bonuses are usually withheld at a flat 22% federal plus 4.99% Georgia. Bonus tax guide.
